Construction work on Webster Street near Union Street.

Due to last Saturday’s gas leak incident, Shaw Pipeline, the contractor working for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), was not able to complete its water main work in the intersection at Webster and Union streets.

This Saturday, January 31, the contractor plans to finish the rest of its work at that location. The weekend work is necessary as it’s the only time MUNI can de-energize its Union Street buses so the contractor can work under the bus lines. Work hours will be from 8 am to 6 pm.

A police officer will be on duty during work hours to ensure pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Extra "stay in crosswalk" signs will also be posted at visible corners of the intersection. If you have any questions or suggestions, please comment at

Unmarked Gas Line Severed

Webster Street looking down Union Street.

To clarify the situation on Saturday morning, an unmarked gas line was accidentally severed where the contractor was working installing the new water main. As a precaution, the police evacuated the immediate vicinity. Because of this incident, the SFPUC contractor may have to work another Saturday at this location. We will confirm by mid-week and appreciate your patience.

The water main construction on Union Street between Green and Lombard streets is progressing on schedule. We appreciate the patience of the Union Street merchants during the extra day of work on Saturday, January 17th. The weekend work was necessary because MUNI is not able to take the electrical buses off-line during weekdays. Meanwhile, the sewer construction on Webster between Broadway Street and Pacific Avenue is reaching its final phase.
